DDG News Update: 2017 Championship Series Changes, Regionals Dates, Errata

Darrin Cole 2017 Championship Series Galvantula League Cup Regionals Steam Siege Worlds

Hello DDG fans! We have a huge amount of news to dump on you, so buckle up!

2017 Championship Series Changes

via Pokemon.com:

"This year, we're introducing a new Championship Series event in each of the four core rating zones. The European Championships, North American Championships, Latin American Championships, and Asia Pacific Championships will take place throughout the season and are open to all players worldwide. These amazing events will feature high Championship Point payouts and a total prize pool of nearly $250,000 per event. In addition, Travel Awards and Stipends will be available to players worldwide based on Championship Point performance in their home rating zone. Travel Awards and Stipends available for each of these events may vary by rating zone and by age division."

Regionals tournaments are being spread throughout the year rather than being clumped together into a few weeks. This will make it possible for more players to travel to many Regionals around the US, or even outside the country because this year there are no residency restrictions for participants. Regionals will also be getting plenty of prize support, "as every Regionals will offer more than $50,000 in prize money, scholarships, and Travel Certificates based on attendance." Many of the Regionals in the US have had their dates and format reported and we will include them on the bottom of this news post so you can start planning your road trips.

Finally, one of the biggest changes is the removal of States and Cities tournaments. Instead of these, there will be a new tournament called the "League Cup". This event will be available quarterly at participating hobby stores and will provide a greater chance for more players to participate in higher level tournaments. League Challenges will remain the entry level Championship Series tournaments and will continue to be available monthly.

Galvantula(Steam Siege) Errata

Via Pokemon.com:

"Due to an error in card text, Galvantula's Double Thread attack will be changed. The original text says:

  • This attack does 30 damage to 2 of your opponent's Pokémon. Also apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.

The text will be changed to match the original intention of the attack, which is to affect only Benched Pokémon. Double Thread will be updated to say:

  • This attack does 30 damage to 2 of your opponent's Benched Pokémon. Apply Weakness and Resistance."
